Hair experiment

Good morning!
I've been doing some hair experiments in Houdini lately and I reached some real good results. It's basically hair on a torus, but I start the animation with an extreme close-up and than pull back the camera to a more standard distance to look at hair. I gotta say I'm really impressed by the result, which looks really good whatever the point of view is. Yéééé! Also, the render time wasn't bad at all, which was around 0.45 seconds to 3 minutes a frame, with a fair amount of antialiasing sampling(12 x12) and motion blur. Enjoy!

Sunburn experiment - Animation

Here's another experimentation done within Houdini 9.5; animation, render and compositing.
What you see here is an animation of objects attributes affected by light; wherever light hits on my sphere objects, it extrude faces. It looks a bit simplistic, but this could be used to make grass grow whenever lights hit, etc... This technique is actually taken from Jason Iversen on www.odforce.net. It is well explained here if you are interested...fun times!

Procedural Extrusions - Animation

Here's another animation I did using Houdini. This one was done using 2 grids; 1 flat and 1 with animated displacement noise on it. I calculated the difference between the 2 grids to drive the extrusions of every face: the bigger the difference, the bigger the extrusion. The distance also drives the color attribute and the extrusion inset so it becomes sharper at the top. fun times...make sure to WATCH THE QUICKTIME, it's way cooler than the sample image...Enjoy!

Houdini 9 study...

Greetings!
It's been almost one year since I posted an image on my web site. It's getting really dusty in here. In the meantime, I've been learning Houdini for almost 1 year...This software doesn't cease to impress me. I've been doing lots of test with it, here's a simple one: a bumpy plane with 5000 instances of a "tree' on it...can't believe it only took 550 megs of ram to render this. Amazing! The tree was generated using Houdini's l-system. Depth of field was added in comp and final tweaks were done in photoshop.

Journey to the center of the earth 3D

Long time since I did not drop a line....I've been really busy working as a CG Lead @ MokkoStudio on the upcoming blockbuster "Journey 3-D" starring Brendan Fraser. This is a really ambitious project mixing live actors and tons of CG...ALL in STEREOSCOPY! (It means with 3D glass!) :) We had the chance to work on a couple of shots and explore this old new technique, teamed with our friends of RodeoFX . It's been a real good challenge and I'd like to thanks everybody at Mokkostudio and RodeoFX for their dedicated work and for sharing this ground breaking experience! Cheers! ...Go see the movie when it comes out!! :)

ps: Picture above is not an actual shot of the film, that's right!

First ZBrush 3 experiments

Zbrush 3 just realeased a couple of days ago. I'm currently spending all my spare times playing with it. I'm really happy with this release, it surpasses all my expectations! So here's W.I.P. I've done in the past few days, using the topology tool to extract a clean model out of a model started from a simple sphere. I love that tool!! Enjoy the pic, there are certainly more coming soon! :)

Passive Rigid Body

Good evening,
here's a drawing I just finished. I started this one as a color exercise in Photoshop and ended up working on it in and out for quite a while. I wanted to push my "digital painting" skills a bit further than usual and play more with lights and volumes. It was really fun and I think I'll start another one soon...enjoy!
